Brakes are not a part to guess on. Knowing what worn pads look and feel like — and confirming fitment before you order — keeps a routine service from turning into a bigger repair.

Signs your brake pads need replacing

  • A grinding or metal-on-metal sound when braking (pads are likely worn through)
  • Squealing that doesn’t go away after the first few uses of the day
  • Longer stopping distance or a spongy-feeling lever/pedal
  • Visibly thin pad material compared to a new pad

Inspecting pads and rotors

Most Can-Am models let you view remaining pad thickness through the caliper without removing the wheel. Compare what you see to your owner’s manual’s minimum thickness spec. While you’re there, check the rotor for deep grooves, uneven wear, or a lip at the outer edge — a badly worn rotor can need replacement alongside the pads.

Why fitment matters more on brakes than most parts

Caliper mounting, rotor diameter and pad shape vary across the Can-Am lineup and even across trims of the same model. A pad that is close but not exact can seat unevenly or fail to fully retract. Confirm your exact model, year and trim before ordering — see our buying guide for how.

After replacing pads

New pads need a bed-in period — a series of moderate stops from low speed lets the pad and rotor surfaces mate properly. Avoid hard, sustained braking immediately after a pad change, and recheck lever/pedal feel before riding normally.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace just the pads and not the rotors?

Usually yes, as long as the rotor is within its minimum thickness spec and free of deep grooves or cracks. If the rotor is worn or damaged, replace it with the pads.

Do front and rear pads wear at the same rate?

No — front and rear brakes typically do different amounts of work and wear at different rates. Inspect both, but don’t assume they need replacing at the same time.
