A machine that sat all winter needs more than a battery charge before its first real ride. A short pre-season check catches the small issues before they turn into a ride cut short.
Fluids first
- Check engine oil level and condition — if it was changed right before storage, it may still be fine; if not, this is the moment.
- Check coolant level on liquid-cooled models.
- Check brake fluid level and look for any discoloration.
Tires and wheels
Tires lose pressure gradually even sitting still. Set pressures to spec cold, and look over the sidewalls for cracking that can develop during long storage. See our tire pressure & wheel fitment guide for specifics.
Battery and electrical
If the battery wasn’t on a maintainer over the off-season, test it before assuming it’s fine — a battery that’s been deeply discharged even once can have reduced capacity going forward. Our battery & electrical guide walks through basic checks.
Belt and drivetrain
Rubber components can stiffen or develop flat spots during long storage. Give the CVT belt a visual check for cracking before your first real ride — see our CVT belt guide.
Brakes
Test the brakes at low speed before you need them at higher speed. Rotors can develop light surface rust after storage that a few gentle stops will usually clear.
Everything else
Check lights, mirrors, fasteners for anything that worked loose during transport or storage, and confirm your air filter is clean before your first dusty ride of the season.
